I always harbor a passion for Greek mythology, be it stemming from bedtime story in my childhood or the fancy world of heroes and gods itself. A wealth of epics and plays never fail to impress upon me the classic heroism and violent dramatic conflicts, one example being Achilles’ choice of a short and glorious life over a long and mediocre one. Nonetheless I can’t help but feel sorry for his doomed death resulted from that coward Paris’ arrow. It would bring me great relief had the poems ended when Achilles shared a fairly short period of reconciliation with the Trojans. But the scattered Homeric poems nevertheless presented me with the vivid depiction of his doomsday. (Well, I reckon that we readers can’t always have what we want.) The readers of the epic may become tragically aware that death, or fate, is whimsical throughout the Homeric poems and other Greek plays, with no one immune from its power, mortals or immortals alike. Perhaps it is the irrevocable fate of the heroes and gods that constitute the reason why the epics are still alive throughout the rivers of time.
